BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — On Dec. 12, during the first home basketball game of the season, Bay High
School will officially dedicate its gymnasium floor to Rich Voiers, a beloved coach who spent more than
three decades shaping young athletes. The ceremony will mark the public unveiling of a tribute that’s
already brought tears and smiles to those who knew Voiers best. For Greg Haneline, Voiers’ son and
the driving force behind the dedication, this moment has been years in the making. And it’s deeply
personal.

The path to the gym floor dedication started in 2015, when Haneline, with help from the alumni
association president, established a scholarship in Voiers’ name for senior basketball players. But
when Voiers passed away in 2021, Haneline knew something more permanent was needed —
something that would keep Voiers’ presence alive in the place where he spent so much of his life.
Haneline assembled a board of former players and assistant coaches who had worked with Voiers.
After discussions with school officials, they realized the gym floor would be the perfect tribute. Working
through Bay High School Athletics and Activities Director Matt Spellman, Haneline presented his vision
to the Bay Village school board. “When I approached the board, I had no leverage and would have
been happy with anything,” Haneline said.

But the board didn’t just approve the dedication — they embraced it. The district even helped perfect the
tribute, locating one of Voiers’ original coaching contracts and comparing it with a handwritten note
he’d written to Haneline to create the ideal signature for the floor.

The community is invited to attend the dedication ceremony, between the JV and varsity boys
basketball games on Dec. 12, and celebrate a coach who gave so much to Bay Village — and to
remember that every dribble, every fast break, every moment of triumph on that court will now carry
Voiers’ signature.

For Haneline and the countless former players and students whose lives Voiers touched, the
dedication represents more than recognition of a successful coach. It’s a permanent reminder that the
lessons learned on that court — preparation, practice, teamwork and character — continue to shape lives
long after the final buzzer.
